Some people claim that the disadvantages of high technology are more than the benefits that it can give. It does not only makes life complex but it is contributory to environmental degradation.

To mention, even just three types of popular and prominent technologies or devices now-a-days, one can determine whether or not, these are more than beneficial or detrimental, not just for a particular person but for all:

Cellphones

You can call anywhere in the world, so convenient, unlike in the old days where you still have to look for a long distance telephone outlet just to reach people. By the use of cellphones, one can even keep track of their families and friends, also, use internet with your mobile phones too.

However, cellphone bills can also become a nightmare if one does not know how to control its use. With the so many features in a cellphone these days, one can be tempted to use it not just from a simple text or call but with the internet too, together with the so many subscriptions that it offers to a user, that, if one is not careful, chances are, high rates of consumption can occur.

Cellphone trackers can be abused and may tend to control somebody. It causes many accidents in the road and some studies also point to these mobile phones the risk of brain tumors and other illnesses which are now subject to further research.

It is also said that the emissions from the metals and materials contained in a cellphone can be hazardous to the environment if not disposed properly. Though, these are still subject to deeper studies.

Computers

Computers expedites and facilitates works in every offices, specially those who have the capacity and capabilities to acquire the same. It became the most important tool in writing, computing, designing, searching & researching, communicating, news reporting, advertising, & etc.

It even catered almost all of the office works, that the necessity for a human person to be employed has diminished. It made the world narrower or smaller in terms of reaching out. In the past, these are only seen in James Bond movies, but now, it’s quite a reality.

While, with all these advantages, computers also has many identified adverse effects not only in peoples lives but most importantly to the environment. Just like, cellphones, computers, emits gases and radiations that can cause detrimental effects to ones mind and body, and the environment too.

Motor Cars/Vehicles

Majority of the motor cars or vehicles these days provides convenience to people, transporting them with such comfort and speed, from one place to another. It boosts our economy as it can deliver goods and services faster than before. It likewise, gives a higher standard of living to individuals, families and even localities.

However, along with these advantages, pollution, traffic jams, higher expenditures, and foremost its gas emissions with very high detrimental effects to human bodies and the environment or has great contribution to global warming (greenhouse effects), resulting in unprecedented calamities and weather disturbance, claiming thousands of lives from time to time.

Now, with just a few of these examples, how can one say that with the advancement of technolocy, can it really be considered a success and an advantage, or is it otherwise?

Ultimately advances in technology - computers for certain - is the only thing capable of saving the Earth from full ecological ruin. An advanced enough society ( more than we are today ) might develop a shield to protect the planet from a number of outside killer events that a non-technical society wouldn't even see before it killed everything.

In more specific cases all of the above mentioned devices help people. Cell phones allow for a whole new level of emergency response. Computers allow for so many things ( including the other listed item ) it boggles the mind but safe to say life expectancy of the pre-computer age isn't nearly what we have today. The higher standards of living provided by relatively inexpensive mobility is hard to measure but considering how heartily it's embraced by nearly all human cultures I'd say the value is very high.

Could things be done better? Sure. Is technology evil in and of itself, of course not.

Technology is another word for the ancient concept depicted by the biblical story of the tree of life. You can't go back, the further down the road we get the more true that becomes but it shouldn't be a source of fear but one of inspiration.

Thanks Kylen for your inputs.

If I've heard it right, a well-known journalist from the Philippines named, Daniel Razon, the CEO of UNTV 37, a Public Service Channel, gave his views on this, saying that:

"the advancement in technology is not really a success but is contributory to the destruction of God's creations."

I agree to it.

The destruction of Earth is pre-determined one way or the other, our ability to think is the only gift which might avert or delay it. God's creations have a wonderful track record of global annihilation fully apart from technology, countless species have come and gone upon that stage of thoughtless death. We are the first ( that we know of ) chance nature ( or God ) has of breaking the cycle of destruction and the means is through our minds aka technology.

The destruction of the earth is not God's intention though. It is the product of man's complacency. It can remind us also that this world is not our home. When one can feel that the world is coming to an end, focus should be on living for eternity.
